Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

This is going to be a shorter note, as I will be seeing nearly everyone this week at conferences.  I am anxious to talk to you about your child’s progress.  You will receive your child’s DIBELS and MISIC results at the conference, where we can discuss any questions that you may have.  Thanks!

“Bunnicula” was a great play on Friday.  The students were all very well behaved and displayed Cadet Pride in a theatre of at least 1,000 students.  Way to go 3rd graders!  Hopefully they shared what they liked about the play with you!

Thank you to Eleanor Junge!  Eleanor is Hunter’s grandmother and she is volunteering in our classroom every Thursday.  She started this past Thursday, where she listened to some students read.  She will continue to come every Thursday and we appreciate all of her help.

Your child is bringing home a letter tonight that explains our reward for showing Cadet Pride: a “Fall Fest Dance.”  We will celebrate the “Fall Fest Dance” on Wednesday, October 31st, which is Halloween.  Because it is Halloween, your child has the option to bring his/her Halloween costume.  Your child can bring the costume to school and change into the costume before the dance.  Your child will NOT wear the costume home, just for the dance.  Your child also cannot wear face paint, blood, or bring weapons that may be an accessory to the costume.  Those items must stay at home.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask!  I know the class is really excited for the dance! J

I am sending home book orders for this month.  I will send home several book orders and if your child does want to order books, please have the orders sent back to school by Monday, November 5th.  I would prefer that you send the book orders with the exact amount of money for it, but I can send back change if needed.  If you are writing a check, those can be made payable to “Scholastic Book Clubs.”  You can also order books online.  Remember to use our class activation code: GQLKG.  Thanks!

Your child’s October reading calendar is due on Thursday (or Monday if your child forgets to bring it on Thursday).  I will be sending home your child’s November reading calendar on Thursday.  The calendar includes a reading goal of 250 minutes that your child will be asked to complete by the end of the month.  If your child reads 20 minutes or more a night, he/she is to color in the icon for that night.  If he/she brings the calendar back at the end of the month and read the amount of minutes his/her goal requires, he/she will get a pizza certificate to Pizza Hut.  If your child brings back all the calendars through April, he/she will get rewarded for a school year of reading! J  This is an OPTIONAL program for students.  Each student will get a calendar every month, but I am not requiring him or her to complete it if they choose not to.  However, if they do not complete the calendars, they will not get the opportunity to eat and celebrate with those who complete it.  If you have any questions about the program, please ask!

Lastly, we are having a one-hour early dismissal both Tuesday, October 30th and Thursday, November 1st for parent/teacher conferences.  There is also NO SCHOOL on Friday, November 2nd, because of parent/teacher conferences.  Thanks!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Thanks and have a great week!

Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

Hello everyone!  I hope you enjoyed the weekend.  It sounds like it is supposed to be nice this week with warmer temperatures.  Yah!

This week is “Character Counts” week.  To celebrate “Character Counts” at the elementary, we are having our own “dress up days.”  These days are as follows:

Monday, October 22nd – Hats off to Respect and being Drug Free!
* It is also Red Ribbon week, so what better way to start off Character Counts week by celebrating being drug free and respecting ourselves and others!  Students are encouraged to wear hats this day to show support for a drug free school and community where people respect each other!

Tuesday October 23rd – Trustworthy Team Tuesday
Come to school in your favorite team jersey or sportswear.  We will celebrate the pillar of Trustworthiness!

Wednesday, October 24th – Responsible Rock Star Day and Rock the Vote!
* Show us your glitter, sunglasses, and music themed clothing as we celebrate the pillar of Responsibility.  Our future’s so bright we gotta wear shades!  Please remember NO face painting.

Thursday, October 25th – Caring Citizens Career Day!
What is your dream job?  Come dressed as what you want to be when you enter the world of work!  We will be celebrating being a citizen who contributes to our community!

Friday, October 26th– Fairness Friday! - Show your school spirit by wearing your Cadet clothes, or just wear our school colors: Blue, White and/or Black.  We will celebrate the pillar of Fairness!

Along with the dress-up days, there will be a "Character Counts Project" that Mrs. McCabe, the guidance counselor, will be organizing.  The "Character Counts Project" we will participate in during Character Counts week is, “Supplies and Snacks for Soldiers, Howard-Winneshiek Cares."  Through this project the students are asked to please bring in tasty snack foods and/or toiletries for our soldiers overseas and residents of the Veterans homes located in Marshalltown and Des Moines, Iowa.  These items are to be dropped off at Crestwood Elementary.  There will be a snack donation box at the building.  The drop off date begins on October 22nd and runs through Ocotober 26th.  The local VFW chapter in Cresco will receive the snacks and toiletries that we have collected, and will sort and mail them to our soldiers this year.  Thank you VFW!!!!!!

We are going to partake in our first field trip for the year.  The third graders will be traveling to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday, October 26th.  We are going to see the play "Bunnicula," which will be based off the chapter book, Bunnicula.  (We have not read the book, but have looked at a movie trailer explaining what it is about so we have a little background knowledge.)  There will be a note being sent home tonight explaining what your child should bring with him or her for this bus trip.  PLEASE SEE THE NOTE!  We are leaving school around 10:30 AM and returning in time for dismissal around 3:15 PM.  Your child WILL need to bring his/her own school lunch for that day.  PLEASE READ THE NOTE REGARDING WHAT YOUR CHILD CAN AND CANNOT BRING.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Thank you!

Picture retakes will take place on Tuesday, October 23rd.  If you would like your child to have his or her pictures retaken, please plan accordingly for that day.  Thank you!

·     Please remember to visit our student blogs.  This week, the students will be posting text evidence from their story in literacy.  Please remember that you will have the opportunity to comment back to them.  They would LOVE a comment from you on something that they have posted.  To view and/or write on our student blog page, please go to http://cmccarville.blogspot.com/ (our blog page) and then click on "Student Blog Page."  Ask your child to show you, have fun with it, and enjoy!

If you have not scheduled a parent teacher conference time, please do so as soon as possible.  If you are unable to schedule online, please call the elementary office and set up a time that works for you.  If something does not work, please let me know so I can rearrange/reschedule a time that best fits your schedule as conferences are next week.  Regarding the report cards that will be sent next week, if you have any questions about your child’s grades, we can discuss the questions at conferences time.  Thanks!

We are nearing the end of the month soon so please see that your child is continuing to read for his/her reading calendar.  Remember that the reading calendar is optional, but it is important that your child be reading every night to help his/her reading.  Thanks!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  I am available anytime.  Thanks for everything, and have a fantastic week!

Sincerely,
Mrs. McCarville

Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

Hello everyone!  I hope you enjoyed a chilly weekend.  It definitely feels like fall outside!  Brr!

The class started our Twitter page on Friday and posted a couple of tweets.  We tweeted about our excitement on Twitter and about learning a few things from the 8th graders about cockroaches.  We started following a couple of classes from across the United States that we are hoping to connect with.  If you have a Twitter account and would like to follow us, please follow MrsMcCarville3C.  We are looking forward to who we connect with!

The Chip Shoppe Fundraiser is due on Wednesday, October 17th.  Please see that your child returns his/her envelope with the money and order form by that date.  Thank you!

At the end of this week, we are going to begin the science tests.  Typically, I send the tests home.  Since it is close to conferences, I will hold onto the science tests to show you at conferences and then you can take the test with you.  Together, we will look over the test and I can explain the grading that is done for those tests.  If your child has not returned the Plant and Animal Populations book, please have him/her return it by Thursday, October 18th.  Thank you!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  I am available anytime.  Thanks for everything, and have a fantastic week!

Sincerely,
Mrs. McCarville
