Reading Strategies to Try at Home with Your Reader

               Sequencing

Recognizing the way writing is

organized can help readers 

understand what is happening.

Fiction is usually arranged in

chronological order, or 

sequential, order.  This means 

that the events in the story are

arranged in the order that they

happen.

              Predicting

When readers predict, they use

information from the text along 

with their own knowledge and 

experiences to make thoughtful

              Summarize

A summary is a paragraph or 

statement in your own words 

that gives the most important 

ideas from what you have read.  

Experienced readers use several

strategies as they summarize, 

such as determining important

information, making inferences,

and visualizing.  Summarizing  

is an important strategy to help

readers monitor comprehension.

         Cause and Effect

An effect is what happens.  A 

cause is why something happens.

As you read, you should try to 

figure out what happens and why

it happens.  You can also look for 

clue words, such as because, so,

since, therefore, and as a result of.

Sometimes causes are not stated 

directly.  You will need to use the

information in the text and your

prior knowledge to figure them out.

       Drawing Conclusions

Drawing conclusions is a skill

readers use to understand what 

they read.  A conclusion is a 

decision a reader makes using

information from the text, such

as details and facts, as well as his

or her own prior knowledge.

Determine Important Information

Experienced readers use

are reading.  Determining 

information is a strategy that 

helps us pick out the most

important ideas as we read.

This is also called "Finding

the Main Idea."

        Author's Purpose

Determining the author's 

purpose is a skill that readers

read.  An author's purpose is 

his or her reason for writing.  

Purposes mainly include to 

persuade, to inform, to 

entertain, and also to express

author's purpose, ask, "What 

does the author want me to 

learn?"

             Visualizing

Experienced readers visualize

their minds based on their

             Fact/Opinion

Facts are pieces of information 

that can be proved.  Opinions

are statements of belief

or personal ideas. Readers

to understand if what they

are reading is true or

      Making Connections

Experienced readers make 

connections to understand 

what they read. They think

about what they've read and

how it relates to their own

Questioning

Experienced readers ask questions about the text in order to understand what they are reading. Questioning helps readers visualize, monitor comprehension, and determine important information. Questions should be asked before reading, during reading, and after reading. Readers also look back in the text to search for the answers to their questions.

Paraphrase

Readers paraphrase by telling the main idea of their reading by using their own words. This helps check their understanding of what they have read. Readers read the text, remove the text, and retell what they have read. Readers are reminded to retell what they have read in their own words and without adding details that were not read.
