Yet More Wacky Weather

I find it interesting that the last few blogs that I have posted have included something about the weather!  It has been an eventful January and I think it is safe to say that most people are looking forward to spring.  Our poor class cannot get in a routine and it has been challenging since we have returned from Christmas break.  Students are more chatty and a little more off task.  Hopefully we can find organized normalcy again!

Obviously winter is in full force.  Unfortunately, there are some students in 3C that are neglecting to wear their winter gear.  Students are coming to school without snow boots and snow pants.  If your child has snow boots and snow pants, please see that he/she is wearing them to school.  While at school, your child is expected to wear boots and snow pants if he/she has them at school.  Please see that your child is prepared for outdoor recess so he/she can stay warm.  Thanks a bunch!

It seems odd to mention this but Parent Teacher Conferences are coming in less than a month!  Boy oh boy do we have some work to do before conferences!  Your child will be bringing home a letter explaining signing up online for Parent Teacher Conferences.  Parent Teacher Conferences will take place Tuesday, February 18th and Thursday, February 20th.  You will need to sign up using the letter for instructions.  You can begin signing up on Monday, February 3rd (after 8:00 AM), but the letter is going home tonight explaining how to do it.  What is different from this conference from the fall conference is that your child is to attend the conference with you because he or she will lead the conference.  I will sit in on the conference with you and your child, but your child will be the main one explaining his/her work and behaviors.  Due to the fact that the conferences are student led, I would appreciate one conference with your child rather than two conferences.  If it does not work in your schedule that you can attend one conference, we can schedule something to make it work.  If you have any questions about signing up online, please contact me or Linda.  Thanks!

Today, I am sending home your child's book order.  Your child is bringing home several different flyers for you and your child to look at.  Instead of writing down the due date and the online code, I am sending an additional letter reminding you how to order online, if you choose to do so. The letter also indicates the due date (Friday, February 7th).  The letter explains the steps of ordering online, but you can also use the link that I have attached to the top of our blog page for easy access to the Scholastic Book Clubs link.  It is your choice to order online or to send a check or cash to school with your child.  If you choose to send book orders to school, please make checks payable to "Scholastic Book Clubs" and not to me.  Again, please see the flyers for the due date and class activation code (for ordering online). Thank you and Happy Reading!

Last week, I stated that we are finishing our unit on multiplication in math.  I will mention again that we would like for the students to start memorizing the multiplication facts.  I am suggesting that your child practice his/her facts
at home.  I am also suggesting that he/she practices the facts in their fact families.  For example, the 2s family would include 0 X 2, 1 X 2,
2 X 2, going all the way up to 2 X 10.  Your child should KNOW each fact within 5 seconds and should NOT count on his/her fingers for the fact to be considered memorized. He/she can use the online sites on the blog page to help practice or can make flashcards at home to practice. Practice, practice, practice with your child.  Thanks for your help!

The January reading calendar will be due soon.  Please see that your child brings back the January calendar early next week.  The February reading calendar will be sent home on Friday, January 31st, with a goal of reading 400 minutes.  It is an option to complete the reading calendar.  However, if your child does decide to complete the calendar, he or she will receive a Pizza Hut certificate.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Thanks!

Phew!  I think I may have gotten a little long-winded in this blog!  I guess there was a lot to say and hopefully I am not forgetting something!  Please contact me with any questions/concerns!  Have a great week!

Quiet Weather This Week?

Hello all!  I must have picked a good week to leave as the weather was CrAZy!  One full day the entire week?! Wowsers!  Hopefully the weather will cooperate more this week.  Thanks for your patience with me as I was gone next week.  This week will be much more normal....hopefully!

This week, we are going to take our mid-year DIBELS assessment and our mid-year MAPs assessment (reading only).  The DIBELS assessment measures your child's reading fluency whereas the MAPs assessment will mainly measure your child's reading comprehension. It is important that your child tries his/her hardest on these tests, so please discuss trying his/her best with your child. Thank you!

We are finishing our unit on multiplication in math.  We would like for the students to start memorizing the multiplication facts.  I am suggesting that your child
practice his/her facts at home.  I am also suggesting that he/she practices the facts in their fact families.  For example, the 2s family would include 0 X 2, 1 X 2, 2 X 2, going all the way up to 2 X 10.  Your child should KNOW each fact within 5 seconds and should NOT count on his/her fingers for the fact to be considered memorized. He/she can use the online sites on the blog page to help practice or can make flashcards at home to practice. Practice, practice, practice with your child.  Thanks for your help!

There will be a 3-hour early dismissal on Wednesday, January 22nd, due to teacher inservice.  Students will be dismissed at 12:25 PM, so please plan accordingly.

Have a wonderful week!  Please contact me with any questions/concerns.  Thank you!

Welcome 2014!

Hello and welcome back!  I hope you enjoyed the extended vacation with our cancelled day from today.  Hopefully, your 3rd grader is ready to finish out the second half of the school year.  Wow!  Did the first half of the year go fast or what?

Your child may have his or her December reading calendar.  If your child has met his or her reading goal and would like to turn in his or her December reading calendar, please do so as soon as possible.  The January reading calendar was sent home before break, with a goal of reading 350 minutes.  It is an option to complete the reading calendar.  However, if your child does decide to complete the calendar, he or she will receive a Pizza Hut certificate.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Thanks!

I wanted to inform you that I will not be here the following week: January 13-17th.  If you have any questions or concerns, please know I will do my best to get back to you as soon as I return home.  If it is an issue that needs to be addressed, you can also contact my sub.  Thanks!

Beginning next week, 3C's schedule will change just a bit. Currently, your child does not have a fifth special/exploratory.  Beginning next week, your child's 5th special/exploratory will begin.  Here is your child's special/exploratory schedule:
Monday: PE
Tuesday: Technology (this is new!)
Wednesday: Art
Thursday: Library
Friday: Music

Report cards will be sent home on Monday, January 13th.  If you have any questions about your child's report card, feel free to contact me.  Thanks!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.  Thanks and have a great week!  I will blog again in a few weeks, unless I share something later this week.

Sincerely,
Mrs. McCarville
